As of August 3, Google has allowed advertisers offering US-targeted cryptocurrency wallet exchange services to advertise. The ban has been in effect since 2018.Bloomberg.

The scope and requirements for allowing advertising of companies and services related to cryptocurrency will be clarified. The changes are described in google Financial Products and Services Policies.

In March 2018, the world’s largest digital advertising seller Alphabet Inc. Google has banned advertising for cryptocurrencies and related products following a similar move by Facebook Inc. and Twitter. Later, Google partially removed the restriction on the exchange of digital currencies for approved advertisers in the US and Japan.

Key changes

As of August 2021, Google has allowed wallets to display ads on search, YouTube, and more if they are certified by the company and meet the requirements below.

  • The company must be registered as a financial services or money transfer company with the US Financial Crime Enforcement Agency (FinCEN), have a banking license, or a state license.
  • Comply with legal requirements, including state and federal laws. Ensure ads and landing pages comply with Google Ads policies.

All previous cryptocurrency exchange certificates will be revoked on August 3, 2021. Advertisers are required to complete the new Google Certification for Cryptocurrency Exchanges and Cryptocurrency Wallets by completing the form, which is available from July 8, 2021.

Certification of financial products, advertising of which is allowed with restrictions

Google Ads allows you to advertise complex products for financial speculation (contracts for difference, financial bets, currency roll-spot, etc.). To do this, advertisers need to be certified by Google. In addition, products, landing pages, and ads must comply with all legal requirements of the country where companies want to display ads.

The main requirement for advertisers is to have a license.

Only advertisers licensed by an eligible organization are eligible for certification. Googlelistedlicensing requirements in different countries:

  1. Asian-Pacific area;
  2. Europe, Africa, and the Middle East;
  3. North and South America.

A certificate is required to use any ad formats and extensions.

What ads are banned on Google?

Google says the ad ban is still in place for:

  1. Initial coin offerings, decentralized financial services (Defi) protocols, and the sale, purchase, and exchange of cryptocurrencies and related products.

Examples (non-exhaustive): advertisements for initial coin offerings, cryptocurrency loans, decentralized exchange initial offerings, token liquidity pools, celebrity cryptocurrency promotions, off-hosted wallets, unregulated decentralized applications.

      2. Landing pages that provide summary data or comparative analysis on cryptocurrencies or related products.

Examples (non-exhaustive): Cryptocurrency trading signals, Cryptocurrency investment tips, aggregator or partner sites with related content, broker reviews.

Advertisers are required to comply with the local laws of all countries and regions in which advertisements are shown.
