They Create a Material That Is Stronger Than Steel But Lighter Plastic
It could be used to make mobile phones more resistant to withstand loads of bridges
Chemical engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT ) have created a material that is stronger than steel, but as light as plastic and can be mass-produced. It is a two-dimensional polymer that, unlike all other polymers that form one-dimensional chains similar to ‘spaghetti’, can be assembled into sheets, a process that until now was considered impossible. The results have just been published in the journal ‘ Nature ‘ and have motivated two new patents.
